Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: You Are God’s Masterpiece (Psalm 139:14 & Ephesians 2:10)
When buildings are built, contractors work from the bottom up. They ensure the foundation is solid and then they work on adding each level. The final touches are often the crowning achievement of the construction. This is the finishing detail work or the peak of the building. This last step is what makes a lot of buildings unique — to the point that some cities can be identified by one specific building. Nashville’s BellSouth Tower, nicknamed the ‘bat building’ for its spire-like bat ears, stands out as a city icon. There’s also the more widely known landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty. In the same way, God’s final touch in creation—mankind—sets us apart as His masterpiece, crafted with divine purpose.

God’s crowning achievement, the one that He poured some of Himself into, was mankind. You and Me – we are his crowning achievement in creation – His workmanship. (Ephesians 2:10 ESV) The same God that created the magnificence of the Milky Way and carved the Grand Canyon sees us as the peak of His creation.
He gave us intelligence, free will, moral integrity, holiness, and dominion over the creatures (Pulpit Commentary). Essentially, he gave us everything that makes us who we are as He fearfully and wonderfully knit us together in our mother’s womb. (Psalm 139:13-15 ESV)
"For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth."
Psalm 139:13-15 (ESV)
These verses remind us that God saw every part of us, shaping us with purpose in the secret place of His creation.
Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them. (Psalm 139:16 ESV)
Verse 16 is so powerful. Before we had the opportunity to live each day: God knew. Before we even existed: God knew. He knew every tear we would shed and every laugh we would laugh before we even existed. And still He took so much care to knit us in our mother’s womb. With infinite care, He wove every detail of our being, delighting in His design. God sees us as worth His time and effort to be alive—and so should we.
Yet, as God’s cherished creation, we often face attacks that make us doubt our worth. It is no wonder Satan likes to attack our very essence. Those dark whispers telling us self-deprecating lies—whether it’s about our looks, abilities, worth, or purpose—are all lies from the enemy. God saw not only our joy and our laughter, but our struggles and our pain – yet He created us.
So, dear beloved in Christ, you and I are His workmanship, created with purpose.
When those thoughts enter your mind remember you are His creation, worthy and beautiful in His sight. Remember, the Lord of Lords and King of Kings lovingly crafted every fiber of your being, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Just as a builder marvels at a finished tower, God delights in you, His cherished creation.
